Worldwide, biofuels are predominantly being produced using pure raffinated vegetable oils. This technology translates into a batch process which, to get to production to an affordable price, requires larger production units (100,000 to 200,000 tons per year). The HTPM installations on the other hand, also handle this raw material at a comparable cost per produced liter (investment cost, operational cost and energy cost with depreciation over ten years) but with a lower production capacity (standard 8.000 ton/unit/year) and with the possibility of modular expansion.
The role of the biodiesel industry is not to replace petroleum diesel, but to help create a balanced energy policy with the greatest benefit to the entire world at large. Biodiesel is one of several alternative fuels designed to extend the usefulness of petroleum, and the longevity, efficiency, and cleanliness of diesel engines.
